Position Summary

Paxwood Acoustics is seeking a full-time Project Engineer/Consultant or Senior Engineer/Consultant. The position involves working on a wide range of noise control and environmental permitting and compliance projects, including sound measurement planning and execution, acoustic modeling and data analysis, and technical report preparation. The role requires periodic out-of-state travel for fieldwork and participation in public meetings. This is a remote position within the Northeastern or Midwestern United States. A location within two hours of a major airport, is preferred.

Responsibilities

This role may be filled at the Project Engineer/Consultant or Senior Engineer/Consultant level depending on the candidate’s experience. Core responsibilities are shared, but level determines the expected autonomy, deliverable ownership (report authorship), technical specialization, and client/regulatory engagement. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and conducting technical scope of projects including geospatial acoustical modeling, data analysis, and field work, including sound level meteorological measurements, exercising professional judgement and, when appropriate, following applicable industry standards across the U.S.
  • Developing practical and actionable noise mitigation recommendations to help clients comply with regulations and meet project goals.
  • Interacting and consulting with clients, colleagues, and collaborators.
  • Preparing graphics, tables, and maps for reports and presentations.
  • Authoring technical reports and correspondence that provides interpretation and professional discernment of data and modeling results with recommendations and conclusions, helping clients and stakeholders make informed decisions about projects.
  • Researching and reviewing relevant technical information, research papers, specifications, and standards.
  • Assisting with administrative and operational tasks as needed.
  • Presenting technical information and answering questions at conferences and public meetings.

SPECIFIC TO PROJECT ENGINEER/CONSULTANT:

  • Developing specialization in specific technical skills and/or market sectors.
  • May mentor junior staff (either level).
  • Managing small to medium-scale projects.
  • Begin testifying at local hearings.

SPECIFIC TO SENIOR ENGINEER/CONSULTANT:

  • Specializes in specific technical skills and/or market sectors.
  • May mentor and manage staff.
  • Managing small to large-scale projects including responsibility for quality assurance.
  • Testifying at local and state hearings.
  • Supports strategic planning and business development.

Required Qualifications

Experience & Education

FOR PROJECT ENGINEER/CONSULTANT:

  • Bachelor’s degree in acoustics, engineering, or related field and has completed coursework in acoustics. Or a Master’s degree in acoustics, engineering, or related field and has at least 2 years of acoustical consulting experience.
  • 6 to 8 years of experience in an acoustical consulting environment. Only two years of acoustical consulting experience needed with a Master’s degree in acoustics, engineering, or related field.

FOR SENIOR ENGINEER/CONSULTANT:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in acoustics, engineering, or related field.
  • 8 to 12 years of experience in an acoustical consulting environment.
  • INCE Board Certification or a Professional Engineering license.

Technical Skillsets & Knowledge

Core Requirements:

  • Proficient in planning and conducting acoustical fieldwork and equipment care and maintenance.
  • Proficient in acoustical data analysis and modeling.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop actionable recommendations for noise reduction.

FOR PROJECT ENGINEER/CONSULTANT:

  • Ability to manage technical scopes of projects.
  • Developing a specialization in specific technical skills and/or market sectors.

FOR SENIOR ENGINEER/CONSULTANT:

  • Ability to manage and lead large or complex projects.
  • Experience conducting quality assurance on projects.
  • Experience providing expert testimony at local or state-level proceedings.
  • Demonstrated specialization in specific technical skills and/or market sectors.

Consulting Skillsets & Knowledge

Core Requirements:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage work across multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to exercise good professional judgment ensuring accurate data collection, analysis, and modeling leading to expert recommendations and insights.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to independently produce technical reports.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing digital and physical work environments.
  • High ethical standards, including maintaining confidential information and professional integrity.

FOR PROJECT ENGINEER/CONSULTANT:

  • Experience with project budgeting and proposing on small to medium scale projects.
  • Experience mentoring staff.
  • Great communications skills and experience communicating regularly with colleagues, clients, and regulatory bodies, including experience presenting at public meetings.

FOR SENIOR ENGINEER/CONSULTANT:

  • Proficient with project budgeting and proposing on small to large scale projects.
  • Experience in business development and/or client management.
  • Demonstrated ability managing and mentoring staff.
  • Great communications skills and experience communicating regularly with colleagues, clients, and regulatory bodies, including experience presenting at public meetings and providing expert testimony in a judicial or quasi-judicial setting.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with ISO 9613-2 modeling software (e.g., CadnaA or SoundPLAN).
  • Experience in geospatial and/or CAD software (e.g., ArcGIS or AutoCAD).
  • Experience programming or data analysis using R, VBA, Python, or MATLAB.
  • Experience in vibration measurements and analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary project team.
