Ostergaard Acoustical Associates (OAA) is seeking an entry level staff engineer / consultant to join our acoustical consulting firm in Woodbridge, New Jersey.  OAA has been providing independent and unbiased acoustical engineering and design services for over five decades.  We are a medium size firm noted for responsiveness and innovative analyses to solve acoustical challenges.  Our consultants take pride in their ability to identify appropriate acoustical goals, develop multiple solutions, and provide guidance on selecting and implementing optimum solutions. We seek an entry level consultant to grow with our firm.  The person should be passionate about acoustics and noise control, enjoy solving challenging problems, and able to communicate and understand technical details.  The position involves working closely with a team across a variety of environmental, industrial, and architectural acoustics projects.  Projects involve issues such as HVAC noise and vibration control, room acoustics, and sound isolation.  The position comprises a mix of field survey work and in-house acoustical analyses. Previous consultation experience is not required.

OAA has been able to incorporate a hybrid work schedule into our business model post-pandemic. Currently, employees work in our office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and are welcome to work from home Mondays and Fridays (accounting for the needs of visits to project sites).

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in architecture, engineering, or science. Coursework related to sound and vibration preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with CAD software and/or a sound level meter is a plus.


  • Must be organized; reliable; and able to manage, schedule, and coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Work with project teams comprising OAA staff and clients (typically architects, engineers, and developers) to analyze and solve acoustical issues.
  • Attend project meetings with clients.
  • Review project design drawings, specifications, and submittals.
  • Develop acoustical models and carry out analyses.
  • Carry out field sound surveys and testing according to standards or defined protocol.
  • Prepare written acoustical letters or reports documenting findings and recommendations.
  • Occasional travel, night work, and weekend work may be required (compensatory time is provided).

Colin Gordon Associates is a small but internationally recognized vibration and noise control consulting firm. In addition to projects covering a full range of vibration and noise control, we specialize in the design of low-vibration and low-noise buildings for the microelectronics, nanotechnology, imaging, and research communities. This is a unique opportunity to participate in an area of expanding importance. We are seeking applicants for the following positions:
Consultant – Applicants should have an MS degree or higher in civil/structural engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics. Coursework or experience in finite element analysis (FEA) of structural systems is required, and other computer modeling for vibration and acoustics analysis is preferred. The position requires some familiarity with the “built environment”, including steel and concrete structures, soils, and foundations. Familiarity with measurement instruments, DSP, general theory of acoustics, and 5+ years of consulting experience in vibration and noise control is also desirable.
Engineering Technician – This is an entry-level position for someone wishing to develop a career working in sound and vibration control. An engineer/technician is required to assist in collection and analysis of acoustic and vibration data and in maintenance and upgrade of measurement instrumentation. Experience with measurement instrumentation and DSP is important. Applicants should be familiar with basic computer hardware and operating systems, and popular software applications for spreadsheets and CAD systems. Applicant should have at least a Baccalaureate or equivalent in engineering or physics. Extra credit will be given for prior experience with instrumentation related to vibration and acoustic measurements.
For both positions, good written and oral communication skills are required. The applicant must be able to work in a team environment, but also independently, as travel and field measurement work is required. Candidates local to the Bay Area, CA are preferred.
