Job Description
Working under the supervision of the Senior Consultant, the Intern will learn the fundamentals of the Acoustical Consultant position. Acoustical Consultants are responsible for designing and engineering acoustical solutions for optimizing acoustical performance as well as controlling, isolating, and mitigating noise and vibration.
The Intern will work independently as well as collaboratively with staff to learn the fundamentals of solving acoustical challenges in a wide variety of projects including healthcare, education, industrial, religious, workplace, outdoor, and more.

Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to the following):
• Help perform tests and measurements for sites to evaluate the acoustical conditions.
• Contribute to a project from beginning to end, including attending internal and client meetings; reading and reviewing architectural, mechanical, and structural plans and consulting on space design and material selection; and provide constructible, affordable, and aesthetically pleasing solutions.
• Manage internal projects and deadlines.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to think creatively.
• Excellent time management, multi-tasking and organizational skills.
• Familiarity with sound and vibration test equipment, preferably Larson-Davis.
• Basic understanding of acoustic principles and real-world application of building and environmental acoustics.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD and acoustical modeling software including EASE, AIM, CATT, SoundPLAN, Cadna-A, or equivalent.
• Data processing and analysis skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and outstanding teaming skills.
• Willingness to be flexible, performing responsibilities not specifically identified in the job description.
• Ability to travel as needed.
• Ability to relocate to our Portland, Oregon office. Anticipated paid internship would run approximately June – August.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Working towards Bachelors or Graduate Degree in Architectural Acoustics, Engineering, Physics, or related field with emphasis on acoustics.

Seeking Entry Level Staff Engineer / Consultant

Ostergaard Acoustical Associates (OAA) is seeking an entry level staff engineer / consultant to join our acoustical consulting firm in West Orange, New Jersey. OAA has been providing independent and unbiased acoustical engineering and design services for over four decades. We are a medium size firm noted for responsiveness and innovative analyses to solve acoustical challenges. Our consultants take pride in their ability to identify appropriate acoustical goals, develop multiple solutions, and provide guidance on selecting and implementing optimum solutions.
We seek an entry level consultant to grow with our firm. The person should be passionate about acoustics and noise control, enjoy solving challenging problems, and able to communicate and understand technical details. The position involves working closely with a team across a variety of environmental, industrial, and architectural acoustics projects. Projects involve issues such as HVAC noise and vibration control, room acoustics, and sound isolation. The position comprises a mix of field survey work and in-house acoustical analyses.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in architecture, engineering, or science. Coursework related to sound and vibration preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience with CAD software and/or a sound level meter is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Must be organized; reliable; and able to manage, schedule, and coordinate multiple tasks.
- Work with project teams comprising OAA staff and client architects and engineers to analyze and solve acoustical issues.
- Attend project meetings with clients.
- Review project design drawings, specifications, and submittals.
- Develop acoustical models and carry out analyses.
- Carry out field sound surveys and testing according to standards or defined protocol.
- Prepare written acoustical letters or reports documenting findings and recommendations.
- Occasional travel, night work, and weekend work may be required (compensatory time is provided as appropriate).

Senior Acoustical Consultant

Synopsis
SLR International Corporation is seeking a Senior Acoustical Consultant to join our operations in Houston. Key responsibilities for this role include project management for existing clients and architectural acoustics work, and participation in new client, project, and business development. Supervisory, management, and mentorship opportunities are available, depending on experience.
The preferred candidate for this position will demonstrate several years of work experience in the acoustical consulting field, a strong professional acumen, and excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Required Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Architecture, or other acoustics-related field of study
• Minimum of 10 years of work experience in Acoustics and/or Noise Control
• Practical knowledge and experience with architectural acoustics and vibration issues, relating to commercial, educational, healthcare, and residential projects
• Experience working with architects, engineers, developers, and constructors
• Experience with building codes, acoustical standards, and engineering aspects of acoustics
• Proficiency or strong familiarity with modeling tools, such as EASE, CATT Acoustics, INSUL, SoundPLAN, and Cadna/A
• Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office software
• Ability to produce and review project documents, including technical reports, drawings, and acoustical specifications
• Demonstrated skills in leadership, organization, and client relations
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated experience and comfortability in public speaking and delivering presentations
Job Responsibilities
• Join various teams of consultants in providing acoustics and noise control services
• Share knowledge and expertise with SLR’s 100+ worldwide acoustical experts
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary environmental service professionals within SLR
• Conduct and supervise drawing reviews and evaluations of architectural designs
• Formulate acoustics and noise control design concepts for enhanced speech intelligibility, reverberation control, reduction of background noise, increased sound transmission loss, and vibration isolation
• Coordinate with design teams, contractors, and manufacturers to develop practical design solutions and alternatives
• Research and review regulatory issues regarding local, state, and national codes
• Contribute to projects during schematic design (SD), design development (DD), contract documents (CD), bid/negotiating, and construction administration (CA) phases
• Prepare bid proposals and project cost estimates
• Manage job budgets and review invoices
• Conduct, develop, and/or direct occasional site testing, with sound measurement instrumentation
• Use computer modeling and results to develop design options and solve project challenges
• Prepare letter reports, technical documents, drawings, and specifications
• Manage and mentor junior staff, with regard to acoustics and noise control analyses
• Develop marketing tools and approaches to win new projects and clients in tandem with SLR’s business development efforts
